The Evil Dead comes at time in history when horror movies are becoming ever more mainstream. [[Cultural Context]] Writers and directors were breaking new ground within cinematography. Sam Raimi adds to this with his ability bring almost an avant-garde style of film making reminisce of the early 1920’s & 30’s[[(Dulac)->Sources]]. Using improvised 'low-tech' camera rigs and an artistic visions of camera techniques[[(DMaster)->Sources]]. His ‘chasing the action’ style of directing set him apart from other horror films at the time. I see this as a definite call back to the type of movies in nickelodeons in the early 1920's. No doubt the influence Raimi got from growing up around the Drive-in's of Michigan in the 1970's [[(Interview)->Sources]].

Looking back at the late 1970’s and Early 1980’s in America you can see a country that is fatigued from the Cold War; The Aids epidemic, and the changing times. It isn’t too far of a stretch to imagination the fears of the time effecting horror movies. Films revolving around unseen entities, faceless monsters murdering the youth, the lack of control and fear of Communism [[History1980->Sources]]. This can be seen even back in 1969’s Gorge A. Romare’s ‘Night of the Living Dead.’ The film that infected cinema with zombies. Changing the conception of what a zombie was at the time into a mindless undead monster. Then there was “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” in 1974 by Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel; John Carpenters, 1978’s “Halloween,” Halloween(1978) all changing the face of horror in different ways. One major thing I’ve noticed from my resource is the commonality these films and Evil Dead have. They were all made with less than 500,000 each with directors and writers working with minimal budgets [[IMDB->Sources]]. People who had drive and determination not letting anything stop them from making amazing films that terrified audiences. Undoubtedly these and movie like these played at the drive-in Sam Raimi often talks of when recounting his influence in horror [[Interview->Sources]]. In the late 70’s he was also going to film school and brought a lot of new ideas to the creation of a horror film. Raimi felt that horror movies of the time seemed to pull their punches and dragged on without action[[Interview->Sources]]. Blending horror and comedy he was able to mitigate the shock of his audience while keeping the rhythm of comedies like the “Three Stooges”. He was also an avant-garde in the way he brought renewed life to horror movies. By creating an exuberant level of grotesque, the viewer could look past the repulsion of the scenes and see the absurdity in it [[EDMovie->Sources]]. Raimi introduced levity to a true horror film creating a new take on an old genre. This might not have been his intention at the time, but it has become his legacy.

Nickelodeons of the early 1920 used the spectacle of film to bring people in and keep them watching [[(Furniss)->Sources]]. You can see this link with the drive-in of the mid 1900s as they drew people in with the spectacle and freedom of watching movies outside. They allowed the first integration of people early in their history and became a place to socialize and hangout. Just like nickelodeons before them they acquired a bad rap and laws started to be put in effect to put a stop to the and studios made it harder for them to get new release and stopped letting them have box office releases. The last hold outs used of drive-ins used horror movies and B-movies to keep the crowds [[(JSTOR)->Sources]]. Eventually with the rise of VHS and other economic problems their popularity was waning as they slowly died out. Luckily for Raimi, Michigan in the 1970’s still had a hold out from the days of Drive-ins. Films like the Exorcist (1973), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), the Omen (1976) and a plethora of B-movies showed at Drive-ins. In one way or another these movies effected most people of their time and most likely inspired Sam Raimi as a young director. In his late teens and early 20’s this effective him greatly as his love of comedy groups like the three stooges and the spectacle of horror films. Eger to become a director on his own he took what was popular of the day and used his keen intellect to bring this spectacle back to horror films with The Evil Dead. In the vane of avant-garde [[(Dulac)->Sources]], Raimi’s inventive camera angles and low-tech work arounds breathed new life into the horror genera. Taking a page from the past he used the ‘chasing the action’ technique of early cinema. [[(Tested)->Sources]] Something Raimi had been quoted saying with horror films that by this time have become suspense and slow. He wanted to create a fast pace horror move that didn’t short on the gore.[[(story)->Sources]]

The Film ‘The Evil Dead,’ spawn two more sequels and a remake in 2013; video games, comic books; a musical and thanks to the fans a TV series in 2015. [[IMDB->Sources]]. Films that followed Evil Dead’s formula of bringing levity to horror but still being scary are films like Nightmare on Elm street, The Chainsaw Massacre, and Friday the 13. Evil Dead showed the movie industry and people in general that horror movies don’t have to be so serious but at the same don’t have to be a joke either. I can see this influence in movies like Braindead (Dead Alive) (1992), Demon Night (1995) and Shaun of the Dead (2004). Then you have films who follow a more comedic rout like that of Evil Dead’s sequels. Films like Dave and Tucker vs. Evil (2010); The Cabin in the woods (2012) and Dead Snow Another bi-product of Evil Dead’s success there were also copycats and cheap knock offs in other countries. A major one was in Italy; the movie was called “la Casa 3” or House 3. Trying to bank on the success of Evil Dead 2 that was called House 2 in Italy [[FANDOM->Sources]].

AH216 History of The Moving Image:
Two other movies that are connected to The Evil Dead in kindred spirit are One Week(1920) by Buster Keaton and Daisies(1966) by Věra Chytilová. When looking at these films its not hard to see how they connect through the special of physical comedy. These directors also had to work with very low budgets had to make do with what they had.
I can’t find any documents talking about whether or not Buster Keaton had an influence on the Three Stooges, who later had an influence on Raimi, but it isn’t hard to imagine such a scenario back in the 1930’s of old Hollywood.
